Music Ministry at St. George's

At St. George’s, music is an integral part of the way that we worship together in community.  Music gives us a means of expressing our experiences and emotions, especially where words alone do not suffice!  The sacred music here at St. George’s does just that.  Here, we offer music that we sing together in community, music that the Choir sings on behalf of all, and instrumental music.

The Choir

The Choir comprises volunteers from the community and sings repertoire from the late medieval period to the present day.  The Choir is responsible for leading the sung liturgy each Sunday at the 10:00 a.m. service.  The Choir also provides music for certain feast days outside of the Sunday morning schedule, including an Advent Lessons and Carols, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Vigil of Easter.

In addition to Sundays and feast days, the Choir collaborates on several community musical events throughout the year.  This repertoire includes major choral works, often with orchestra and professional soloists, and in collaboration with choirs from across the Diocese of Newark.

Rehearsals are each Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., and on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.  All are welcome to join the Choir regardless of experience, ability, or perceived talent.  The Choir receives professional musical instruction throughout the year, truly making it possible for everyone to sing!

Our Music

The congregation is the most important part of our music ministry here at St. George’s.  The hymns that we sing together come from the Hymnal 1982, Lift Every Voice and Sing (LEVAS), and Wonder, Love, and Praise (WLP) hymnals, occasionally supplemented by newly composed hymnody.  The people of St. George’s sing psalms and occasional introits along with the choir.  Together, we make a joyful noise unto God.
