RSVP for Silent Retreat at Holy Cross Monastery

Friday, March 15, 2019 - 6:00pm to Sunday, March 17, 2019 - 1:00pm

Who knew there were Episcopalian Monks?! Not only that but they are close by and are devoted to hospitality through retreat. If you have never been to Holy Cross Monastery (about 90 mins from Maplewood in West Park, N.Y.) you will find it to be a spiritual oasis offering deeply personal spiritual growth experience in a beautiful surrounding. Outside of the Listening sessions with the retreat leader, your days are self directed. You may attend one of five liturgies of The Hours with the monks whose chanting of the psalms is quite beautiful, or you can hike, explore the nooks and crannies of the monastery, walk the outdoor labyrinth, or take a long, long nap. This is an opportunity for refreshment like none other.

Please RSVP to sharon.mcsorley@aol.com if you will be able to come. More details below:

Description of Retreat theme:
Prompted by celebrated verses from the ancient Celtic Prayer known as St Patrick’s Breastplate, our silent retreat will focus on the many-faceted ways in which Christ is present to us: “Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me.” The addresses will outline a variety of prayer ‘experiments’ for participants to try so that they can sense for themselves dimensions of their relationship with Christ that they may not have explored before. These experiments can be extended throughout Lent to give shape and depth to our preparation for Holy Week and Easter.
Father Martin L. Smith is well known throughout the Episcopal Church and beyond for his explorations of contemporary spirituality through workshops, retreats and preaching, and widely read books, including The Word is Very Near You, A Season for the Spirit, Reconciliation, Compass and Stars, Love Set Free, and recently, with the Rev. Julia Gatta, Go in Peace: the Art of Hearing Confessions.

Cost is $365 all inclusive; (financial assistance available) private rooms; a culinary delight!

If you are interested, please RSVP to Sharon McSorley at sharon.mcsorley@aol.com by Friday January 25th If we can get 10 parishioners to attend we can have a block of rooms reserved for us.

This is a personal testament from a retreat.
"A few years ago I made a decision that shocked my friends – I decided to go on a silent treat at Holy Cross Monastery with a group of fellow St. Georgians. Why were they so surprised? I’m one of the most talkative people around and they couldn’t imagine that I’d make it through the weekend! Not only did I survive, I grew spiritually in ways I would never have anticipated. The retreat afforded “time-out-of-time” to get in touch with my own spirituality and engage with others through the high quality facilitated sessions. For me, the retreat was grounding, enlightening and life affirming. I can’t wait to return."
