Matthew 25:36: I was in prison and you came to visit me.
For the month of April, the Stewardship and Outreach Committees are shining a spotlight on ministries that St. George’s supports that serve those who are incarcerated and detained.
The recent forum on the Diocese of Newark’s Prison Ministry provided attendees with insights about circumstances that often lead young people into gangs and criminal activity, a picture of who is imprisoned and jailed in the State of New Jersey, and what we might do to support and advocate for those in prison and their families. Stay tuned for notes from the session and some opportunities for you and your family to get involved. On behalf of St. George’s, the Outreach Committee made a grant of $1000 to the Prison Ministry to support their work. See Valyrie Laedlein (email@example.com
) for more info.
This month, we are also featuring the work of First Friends of NJ and NY, which provides volunteer visitation, resettlement assistance and advocacy for detained immigrants and asylum seekers. Over the next few Sundays, look in this space for ways St. Georgians and others in the Diocese have supported the work of First Friends. Meanwhile, please consider attending their annual Beacon of Hope gala – on the evening of Tuesday, April 30, at Mayfair Farms. Deacon Ken Boccino, who is on the Board of First Friends, will be happy to facilitate the purchase of tickets and see if St. George’s attendees might sit together for the dinner. It’s always a wonderful event!
