Confirmation is a sacrament whereby a youth affirms for him/herself the vows made by their Godparents at Baptism. It is also available for adults who have never been confirmed or people from other denominations desiring to become fully part of the Episcopal Church. If an adult has been confirmed in another denomination, the ceremony of Reception takes place which recognizes the validity of their previous Confirmation, but also welcomes them officially into the Episcopal Church.
Regarding the preparation of youth, the Confirmation process has been reorganized. The process invites youth entering 8th or 9th grade. Older youth will have a program designed especially for them. The Confirmation Class will participate in weekly meetings at a time to be determined in a prior meeting with parents. In addition there will be trips to sites significant for their religious, cultural, or service orientations.
Confirmations are held in the spring at Trinity & St. Phillip’s Cathedral in Newark. Our classes will join the youth and adults of other churches in a large celebration.
Adults often inquire about Confirmation when they feel a desire to learn more about the Episcopal Church, or delve deeper into topics of spirituality or the Christian faith. Preparing adults for Confirmation or Reception is done during a series of study meetings held during Lent.
Attending classes in no way obligates any youth or adult to follow through with Confirmation or Reception. The classes are considered to be exploration, and a decision to participate in the ceremony itself is made prior to the ceremony at the Cathedral.
